Maximum Refrigerator Storage Times

I'm guilty of storing food in the fridge for too long. We're so used to keeping everything in the fridge that we often forgot its existence until we accidentally stumble upon it, or when there's a foul smell, or when we need it, we found it has already dried up/turn soft/changed color. I think the convenience a fridge brings us make us forget that food do have a "life-span:, even in the fridge.

Below is something I found which should give us an idea how long we can keep food in the fridge:

Vegetables
Green Vegetables 3 - 4 days
Salad Leaves 2 - 3 days

Dairy Food
Eggs 1 week
Milk 4 -5 days

Seafood
Fish 1 day
Shellfish 1 day

Raw Meat
Bacon 7 days
Minced Meat 1 day
Poultry 2 days
Raw sliced meat 2 days

Cooked Meat
Sliced meat 2 days
Ham 2 days
Ham (vacuum-packed) 1 -2 weeks

Here's also some pointers to ensure the fridge functions effectively:

  1. Never put hot food in the fridge. Always let it cool first. Hot food will cause the temperature of the fridge to rise.
  2. Avoid over stuffing your fridge with too many things and this restricts air circulation
  3. Store raw and cooked food in separate shelves, and ensure all items are properly wrapped. This is to avoid bacterial cross contamination
